loved this film to bits. managed to catch one of the first showings of it at the berlinale (2025), and i have to say it is by far one of my favourites among the various films i saw at the festival. the editing, colour grading, shot setups and the actors portrayals of the characters gave this film so much charm and depth that i’m incredibly impatient to watch it again!! the localisation of it via english subtitles didn’t do its wicked humour justice.
i pretty much have nothing but praise for this incredible film; one of its strongest aspects, aside from the filmmaking and artistry it exhibits, is its ability to properly address a serious political issue such as the 60s riots in paris, without the political issue being the main point of the film. it effectively communicates how just because you cant see the trauma, just because you think you finally forgot, doesn't mean its not there: it was there in the space under the stairs, Schrödinger's cat, calling out to the grandfather as he contends with how the protests in '68 in paris, and the inherent violence from the crs, mirrors the presence of the ss during ww2.

there are so many other incredible motifs it would take combing through the whole movie with a transcript to properly pick out all the details!! the funeral scene with the shots from the protests outside of the gates ringing in the background!! the burning of the great-grandmother in the dark, the burning of a past survived with the light from the flames illuminating the grandfather with his sons, the future, behind him!! the breaking down of the car right before they reach odessa to return to where the family comes from, forcing them to make the choice between carrying on to the past or returning to france, thus moving forward to the future!! augh!!!
the balance exhibited in this film in regards to all of the aspects that make up this film is incredible, and upon rewatching it as it has finally been made available on select streaming platforms, it still holds up!!
